Fatal crash near Woodstock

An unidentified individual is dead after a single-vehicle crash near Woodstock on Monday evening.

On Monday, March 3, 2025, at 4:49 p.m., McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Woodstock Fire & Rescue responded to a single vehicle crash in the 8200 block of Mason Hill Road in unincorporated Woodstock.

First responders arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

It was also discovered that a person was still within the vehicle and pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2019 Chrysler 300 was traveling westbound on Mason Hill Road, to the west of Cherry Valley Road.

The vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and exited the roadway to the right, striking a tree and catching fire.

The victim is believed to be a male subject and has not been positively identified.

The subject was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Speed is believed to be a factor of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

From the Coroner:

McHenry County Coroner, Dr. Michael Rein, announced that his office was notified on March 3, 2025, by McHenry County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a death of a single person car accident around the 8200 block of Mason Hill Rd. in unincorporated Woodstock.

The decedent’s car was engulfed by flames at the accident.

Due to the nature of the fire the McHenry County Coroner’s Office has not been able to positively ID this individual.

An autopsy was performed on March 4, 2025.

Toxicology is currently pending.

The Coroner’s Office is continuing to work collaboratively with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at this time.

From the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District:

Fatal Vehicle Crash on Mason Hill Road

On Monday, March 3, 2025, at 4:49 p.m., the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District was dispatched to the 8200 block of Mason Hill Road for a reported vehicle fire.

While en route, additional 911 calls indicated that the fire was the result of a crash, with reports that the vehicle had struck a tree and the occupant’s whereabouts were unknown. 

Upon arrival, firefighters observed a single vehicle with heavy damage that had collided with a tree and was fully engulfed in flames.

Crews immediately deployed a hose line to begin fire suppression.

During the operation, the vehicle’s fuel tank ruptured, intensifying the fire.

Additional water resources were requested, and firefighters applied a biodegradable, environmentally friendly foam to help smother the fire and prevent reignition. 

Following suppression efforts, firefighters located one deceased occupant inside the vehicle. 

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
