I worked most of my life in the public sector:

  • United States Bureau of the Budget (now the Office of Management and Budget)
  • McHenry County Treasurer
  • Illinois State Representative
  • Bureau of Benefits Manager, Illinois Department of Central Management Services

As a result, I have an excellent state pension (about $110,000 a year) and Cadillac health benefits, but a piddling monthly Social Security payment: $317. (More is taken out for Medicare.)

Preparing my income tax information I looked up the monthly contribution I make electronically and I astounded to see a March 5th $6,714 transfer from the U.S. Department of the Treasury from Social Security.

I can only wonder how many tens of thousands of dollars teachers and others whose primary employment was in the public sector received.
