From the Illinois Freedom Caucus:
IL Freedom Caucus to IL home school families: Do not give up the fight for your freedom
Springfield, IL – The Illinois Freedom Caucus is sending a message to Illinois homeschool families to keep fighting for their freedom despite the setback of a House Committee advancing a bill to force home school families to register with their local schools.
House Bill 2827 passed the Illinois House Education Policy Committee today.
The measure requires homeschool families to register with their local schools and includes possible jail for noncompliance.
The Illinois Freedom Caucus is issuing the following statement:
“Despite the thousands of homeschool parents and children lining the half of our Capitol, and the over 45,000 witness slips opposing House Bill 2827, eight Democrats voted to pass the bill out of committee today. The arguments of the proponents all have one thing in common; they believe parents cannot be trusted to educate their own children at home without the consent and regulation of the government. The fact of the matter is that House Bill 2827 will raise costs, increase the workload for state agencies, and put a serious burden on parents who are simply exercising their right to educate their child at home.
This issue doesn’t end here. There will likely be an amendment, there will be more hearings, there will be floor discussion. Our message to the homeschool families is this: do not give up! We are with you.”
