From the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County:
McHenry Mass Transportation Alert
Transit in Northeastern Illinois is facing a funding crisis starting next year due to Federal COVID relief funding running out in 2026, as well as the general underinvestment on the State level in this area.
McHenry County in particular lacks basic services, which inhibits use of transit, and leads to traffic congestion and pollution.
State lawmakers are now deciding on the fate of mass transportation (May 31 deadline = end of Spring session).
The Transportation Action Team encourages Defenders members to reach out to your representatives and to Senator Don Dewitte, Republican minority leader of the Revenue and Transportation Committee, to advocate for securing $1.5 billion per year in transit funding for the State.
Members may also review and support Senate Bill SB1938 to modernize and improve the State’s public transit system.
