II guess I was a new (very temporary) member of the Deep State in 1966-67.

A Civil Service Management Intern hire at the United States Bureau of the Budget, I was assigned the Small Business Administration’s budget.

In 1964, my father had almost knocked off the Chairman of the McHenry County Board losing the Republican Primary Election for the first County Auditor spot by about 300 votes. (Counties by way of law got a County Auditor when their population reached 80,000. By 1966, McHenry County’s was a bit over 90,000.)

I tried to convince him to run for County Treasurer in 1966, but he demurred, suggesting I run for the office instead.

At age 23, what did I have to lose?

After word of my decision made the rounds at the SBA, I was in its Budget Officer’s office and he pulled open the bottom drawer of his Steelcase desk.

In it was a six-pack of Goldwater.

So, here in the middle of the Lyndon B. Johnson Administration in a Civil Service job was a dyed-in-the-wool Republican sharing his secret with me.

Bringing this to mind was the Daily Signal story of the unwillingness of Federal bureaucrats who voted for Kamala Harris to follow instructions from Donald Trump.
