Multi-Vehicle Crash with Multiple Patients on Route 20 in Marengo
On Thursday, December 19, 2024, at approximately 4:21 p.m., the Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts responded to a multi-vehicle crash just west of the intersection of W. Grant Highway (Route 20) and Thorne Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a serious collision involving four vehicles, one of which was overturned.
Due to the number of potential patient transports and the severity of the incident, a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to request additional ambulances and manpower. A medical helicopter was also requested to the scene to provide critical care transport.
The overturned vehicle contained two occupants who sustained significant injuries.
An adult male from the vehicle was airlifted by LifeNet to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford with critical injuries.
An adult female from the same vehicle was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with serious injuries.
An adult male driver of a pickup truck involved in the crash was transported to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with minor injuries.
Three additional patients involved in the crash were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and declined further medical treatment.
All patients had exited their vehicles prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, and no extrication was required.
During this incident, the Marengo Fire & Rescue District was dispatched to several additional unrelated calls throughout the District, all of which were handled by neighboring agencies.
