Let’s Talk About Cyberbullying & Online Safety
Recently, I answered a question for Shaw Media about how to address concerns regarding cyberbullying and inappropriate content access through student cell phones. This is an issue that impacts students, parents, educators, and the community.
Beyond cyberbullying, we must also tackle the risks of harmful online content.
A recent investigation by ProPublica highlighted two teens, Natalie Rupnow and Solomon Henderson, who were radicalized through online networks glorifying violence. These platforms fostered a sense of community around harmful ideologies.
Some students have accessed dangerous content through school networks, showing the need for stronger online monitoring and education. Here’s what I believe D158 should focus on to protect students:
Enhance Online Monitoring & Filtering to block harmful websites.
Expand Digital Literacy Education so students recognize online dangers.
Increase Parental Involvement with workshops & better communication.
Collaborate with Law Enforcement to stay ahead of digital threats.
Provide Mental Health Support to address vulnerabilities.
D158 has a zero-tolerance policy on cyberbullying, multiple reporting avenues, and staff training on bullying prevention. To support parents, D158 has partnered with SmartSocial, but more outreach is needed to improve engagement.
We must work together to create a safer digital environment. How can we better support students online? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
