With the defeat of two incumbent McHenry County Board Democrats and the pickup of Kelli Wegener’s seat vacated when she vacated in her unsuccessful challenge, Republicans now have a 15-3 margin.
Now the margin is 13-5.
Democrats defeated were
- Theresa Meshes, District 1, beaten by Pat Sullivan
- Lou Ness, District, District 7, defeated by Paul Thomas
Add in the victory of Republican Deena Krieger for the empty seat in District 5 and subtract the narrow loss of John Reinert in District 2 by 216 and the result is the upcoming 15-3 Republican majority.
That the three Democratic Party tax hikers will not be on the County Board come December may mean the proposed property tax hike proposed by the Board’s Finance Committee (on which both Meshes and Wegener serve and provided the majority vote for higher real estate taxes) will not materialize.
And, if current Board members at the December meeting vote to hike taxes, that tax levy could be amended in December.
The newly-elected Board members could vote for a flat tax levy, which would result in people’s paying a smaller proportion of the total tax bill.
And, if more money is desired to hire three new Deputy Sheriffs, that money can be found in proceeds from the RTA sales tax,
