Skillicorn’s Press Release Concerning His Opposition to the Pritzker Plastic Bag Tax

Skillicorn Files Resolution to Oppose Pritzker’s Proposed Plastic Bag Tax

EAST DUNDEE – State Representative Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) has filed a resolution in the Illinois House of Representatives to oppose the implementation of a plastic bag tax in Illinois.

As part of his recent budget address, new Governor J.B. Pritzker proposed several new taxes to increase state revenues, one of which being a 5¢ per bag excise tax on plastic bags.

“It’s really incredible that despite record numbers of people and jobs leaving Illinois every year, Pritzker proposed 11 different ways to increase taxes and fees in his budget address without any plans to cut state spending,” said Skillicorn.

“Illinois can’t fix its financial problems by making a special new tax on plastic bags, or any other inconsequential item.

‘We need to cut spending.”

The resolution filed by Skillicorn, House Resolution 156, points out that Illinoisans already face one of the highest overall tax burdens in the country.

This tax burden has created an inhospitable climate to citizens and businesses alike, as well as noting public sentiment against a plastic bag tax will drive down the limited revenues the Pritzker administration hopes to get from its implementation.

“Just this week, an independent report again ranked Illinois with the second highest property taxes in the nation,” said Skillicorn.

“We should be focusing on cutting the bureaucratic bloat causing these
high taxes instead of adding a new regressive tax on plastic bags.”

The report referenced by Skillicorn was released by WalletHub this week.

The personal finance organization annually evaluates various tax burdens across the country.

Their report on property taxes found Illinois had the second highest effective property tax rate among all 50 states and the District of Columbia at a rate of 2.31%.

Illinois was second only to New Jersey with a rate of 2.44%.

The average U.S. household pays $2,279 in property taxes for the average U.S. home valued at $193,500, but in Illinois we pay $4,476 in property taxes for the same home.

Skillicorn’s Press Release Concerning His Opposition to the Pritzker Plastic Bag Tax — 8 Comments

  1. When will Skillicorn take on the REAL issues, and not drama fest/press release hoopla about inconsequential triva like this!

  2. Skillicorn HAS taken on real issues. He constantly talks about cutting spending. However, the new “tax and spend” Democrat Billionaire governor focuses on new taxes instead of cutting spending. The new Billionaire governor who disconnected his toilets in one of his mansions to lower HIS real estate taxes. He is a hypocrite.

If the new governor were realistic about fixing the financial situation of Illinois, the worst of 50 States in the US, he would publish and focus on a total list of perhaps thousands of items paid for by the State and homeowners and indicate how he intends to either eliminate those items or cut back and give haircuts to those items.

  3. Plastic is destroying the environment. My newsfeed has been bombarded this week about microplastic fibers endangering the ecosystem of the oceans. Government should incentivize people to use reusable bags.

All lollbergtarians care about is maximizing profit with no value placed on the environment, and “conservatives” don’t believe in conserving anything despite the fact that their political forebearers created the conservationist movement.

Of all the taxes Pritzker is proposing, this is the one I find least objectionable.

5 cents a bag for killing the planet is a fair trade. Suck it up.

We’re gonna tax your bags whether you like it or not and stop throwing so much shit into the water.

Go to some third world country if you want to live in filth.

  4. In case ‘An American’ did not see the comment entered on a previous post about the revenue enhancing plastic bag tax which do absolutely nothing to reduce the ocean pollution I will post it here also.

“Heinrich may want to look into the source of the plastic in the ocean.

10 Rivers account for 95 % of the ocean plastic.

In East Asia: Yangtze, Yellow, Hai He, Pearl, Amur and Mekong

In South Asia: Indus and Ganges Delta

    In Africa: Niger and Nile

Taxing plastic bags is simply another proposed revenue source and will do absolutely nothing to reduce ocean plastic.

Instead of a tax on plastic, how about removing taxpayer support for baby killers?”

  5. Saying India and China pollute more is a lame argument.

They also both have at least 4 times the population and burn poo for heat.

You can see garbage all over the streets in almost any American city.

Is it that much of a sacrifice to use a reusable bag?

People who shop at Aldi do it all the time.

Yeah, if you put meat in a bag you should wash it…

A few people getting sick isn’t proof of a widespread problem and the argument is especially rich coming from lolbergs who want to abolish the FDA.

    We’re gonna tax your bags

cough up your nickels lolbergs and fake conservatives.

  6. With any kind of justice, Skillicorn will choke on a plastic bag the next time he goes to the beach.

  7. Maybe instead of taxing these bags we should just ban them.
