Christmas Day Teaching About Voting

Dr. Tony Evans

While celebrating Christmas, remember Christ’s teachings on everything and with 2020 Elections, that includes Biblical teaching on voting

Christmas Day 2019, and the 2020 campaigns at all levels have paused. After today, and especially after the first of the year, the 2020 Elections will become much more visible and in earnest, with the Iowa Caucus on February 3 for the Democratic presidential candidates, and three days after, early voting for the March 17 Illinois primary election begins.

Since we celebrate the birth of Christ today (and thank God for Jesus every day of the year), what is the Scriptures’ teaching on voting, and how we decide which candidate for each office should be supported?

As an election approaches, most voters will ask:

“Who should I vote for?”

But Biblical teaching prompts a different question:

“How should I vote in light of God’s relationship to government?”

Dr. Tony Evans, president of The Urban Alternative and senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, TX, in an interview a few years back, succinctly applies God’s teaching, through Scripture, in timeless application of Scripture to every election.

The 2020 elections are no different.

And given local voters in McHenry County and across Illinois have significant decisions to make in the upcoming primary election, the Biblical perspective applies to all of us.

Especially if you claim to be a Christ follower.

The first two minutes of the interview with Dr. Evans the above questions are answered, and the remainder of the interview applies Biblical reference to the application of God’s relationship to government, including the size, scope of government, and including taxes.

The video is just under 25 minutes long, and applies teachings Dr. Evans published in a book of his from a few years back called How Should Christians Vote?

The video was broadcast on Total Living Network (TLN) in 2016, and refers to the 2016 elections, but as the video states, teachings based on the timeless Word of God are timeless, too.

Dr. Evans’ book How Should Christians Vote? and the Biblical teachings from it were republished with updated metrics/examples in late 2016 as Kingdom Citizen.

Finally, some feedback shared concerning Dr. Evans has been in the context “we did a Bible study on one of his books”. Bible studies and teachings in a small group setting are terrific and hopefully a great experience.

Biblical teachings, and its application to life including voting, should be applied in everything, including outside of Bible studies and church in general. One learns Biblical teachings through the church, but God’s Word expects God’s teaching to be applied in the real world.

And while, even applying Biblical teachings to the candidates we choose to support, others applying the same teachings may have different choices.

And that is pointed out in the video, and those kinds of differences of opinion, based on Scripture, are to be expected, and welcome.
