One of the inspirations of Lakewood’s npw-defunct SportsPlex proposal was probably the one in Libertyville.
Now the Daily Herald reports this about part of the Libertyville Sportsplex property:
“The sports complex opened in 2002, but aside from the main building that’s continuing operations, it has been a drain on village finances.” [Emphasis added.]
Lakewood’s SportsPlex, as well as the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District created to finance it, was killed by Paul Serwatka with the help of Trustees elected when he went from being Village Trustee to Village President.

Who needs a sports complex? Who needs sports? Who needs a com? Who needs a plex? Who needs exercise? Who needs anything? Let’s follow Serwatka’s leadership and oppose anything and everything. Most Lakewood residents and surrounding area do not really realize the bullet they dodged with this.
What a fiasco that would have been. Thanks to Serwatka for opposing that TIF monster. If some people think a sports complex is needed, let them fund and build it with private capital with zero tax breaks. Require they have a reserve fund to tear down the complex when it is no longer used much and/or profitable.
In the meantime, people can exercise by walking and/or doing push ups like creepy Joe Biden talks about. Teens and adults could play golf or singles tennis remembering to stay 6 feet apart. Children can romp about their backyards or play hopskotch or shoot hoops in their driveway.

No matter what you think of Serwatka he saved Lakewood tax payers a lot of money.
