Wither the Indian Vote in Joe Walsh’s New 8th District?

Bill Baar’s West Side, a blog from down the Fox River Valley, published the photo you see below:

A man wore this tee shirt to a Joe Walsh rally on Saturday.

The message on the tee shirt is

Walsh
U. S. Congress

_____

Friend of India

_____

Deeds
Not Just Words

So, if you are an Indian American who supported Raja Krishnamoorthi in the primary election where all the white Democrats supported Tammy Duckworth, who do you vote for in November?

Tammy Duckworth, who might end up being a lifer in the 8th District.

Or first-termer Joe Walsh, who promises only to serve three terms.

Interesting question, don’t you think?

Just found three TV ads aimed at Indian Americans in the 8th Congressional District of Bill Baar’s West Side web side.

You can see them here.

Wither the Indian Vote in Joe Walsh’s New 8th District? — 10 Comments

  1. What an odd framing of their decision.

Maybe they should vote for the candidate that they agree with, rather than vote for Walsh because Tammy isn’t Indian-American.

    Just saying…

  2. @Dave, Walsh has done a lot of outreach to the Indian American community.

I suspect Democrats have viewed them as another group of victims and automatic Democratic votes.

If Walsh wins, I think Indian Americans will give him the winning edge, and it will be because they’re an entrepreneurial community, and Walsh’s message resonants with them.

  3. @Bill – you’re comment has little/nothing to do with Cal’s frame of the issue.

In fact, it is completely contrary to Cal’s frame.

Further, it does not conflict with what I said.

I don’t doubt that Walsh has done significant outreach to the Indian American community.

Cal’s frame is that Indian Americans should vote for Walsh so that they can possibly vote for Raja next cycle, whereas if Duckworth wins, she’ll be a lifer.

You’re frame is that Indian Americans are going to vote for Walsh because a) Walsh has done significant outreach to their community, and b) they’re an “entrepreneurial community” that resonates with Walsh’s community.

  4. Cal – those ads don’t respond to anything I said.

You still seem to think that Indian Americans should vote for Walsh for reasons that have nothing to do with their positions on any issues.

  5. Please watch the videos on Bill Baar’s blog. Hear Indiana-Americans speak to the issues.

  6. Cal – all of those videos are actually on issues, and are a far cry from your “Vote for Walsh because all of the whites supported Tammy Duckworth” argument.

Look – I don’t doubt that there are Indian Americans that are going to vote for Walsh. I have no idea at what percentage.

But your argument is a race/ethnicity argument, and not a policy argument. Bill Baar and his videos make policy arguments.

  7. I didn’t grow up in Illinois, so don’t really understand ethnic politics. I do know they exit, however.

    Hence my observation.

  8. East Indians are a difficult group to count on- even Raja found that out- they are not traditionally active voters.

  9. Most important line from this post

CAL SKINNER SAYS: “Tammy Duckworth, who might end up being a lifer in the 8th District.”
