Percentage of Municipal Property Taxes Taken by Employee Pensions

The Daily Herald’s Jake Griffin again does ground breaking research on local government.

This time, he looks at the percentage of municipal property taxes that goes to pay for employee pensions.

Here are the McHenry County results:

  • Fox Lake – 42.9%
  • Algonquin 41.6%
  • Cary – 39.3%
  • Fox River Grove – 34.5%
  • Lake in the Hills – 30.8%
  • Huntley 26.1%
  • Lakemoor – 15.2%
  • Barrington Hills – 14.1%

In the article State Senator Don McConchie observes,

“It would be less expensive to give new workers Social Security and a 401(k). And these significant costs are eventually going to crowd out other services.”

Would a reader be willing to research percentages from the remaining municipalities in McHenry County?

Here is the source on the State Comptroller’s web site.

  1. With a quick short lesson on how to maneuver the Susan Mendoza comptroller site, might be interested.

Maybe suggest showing one town example of how/what to look up for that town on the site, then a person could more easily figure out how to do for the remainder of the Mchenry County municipalities missing.

Either way, looks like some towns have more than double what others do in payout percentages…either fatter paychecks for that towns employees, way more workers on public pension, and/or less available towards actual city services.

Guaranteed Private Sector businesses dont have anywhere near these percentages.

Social security and 401ks take care of that.

Why cant our city and State Governments?

Thank you Dan McConchie, a politician brave enough to dare utter the words “social security and 401ks”

Anyone going to the Batavia Debates for 14th Candidates, if they allow written questions as they did at MCC (which they never announced they were doing at the front end) please try and get this questions asked- of at least Oberweis and Resin.

Why are we the public not on guaranteed pensions anymore but paying for others, our city and state workers to be?

  2. The biggest part of each municipalities pension payouts are most likely for police dept’s pensions.

Barrington Hill’s 14.1% is probably at least 95% for police pensions.

Not listed, but fireman’s pensions are probably second on the list of property tax drains.

  3. Don’t forget township road districts and township fire districts.
