What Happened at the Huntley School District Teacher Contract Negotiations Monday Night

Here’s the Huntley School District Board of Education’s take on negotiations with the Huntley Education Association last night.

One of my readers has asked why I don’t publish what the union has to say. My reply was that I would be please do, if the HEA would send it to me.

The statement says another negotiating session is scheduled for 5 tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Mediation Meeting on Monday Evening

The HEA (Huntley Education Association) implemented a strike in District 158 today. The Board believes it is extremely disappointing that after the considerable amount of time spent working towards a settlement (over forty hours this weekend alone), reaching tentative agreement on more than 80% of the language items in the contract and offering a fair compensation to all members of the union, their efforts were futile.

Another Federal Mediation session between the Board of Education and the HEA leadership began at 6:00 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2008. At 8:00 p.m., the Board received the first communication from the HEA. The communication came in the form of a supposal (non-binding proposal) the Board believes represented a step backward in regards to salary compensation from where the two parties were at 3:00 Monday morning.

The HEA leadership continues to insist that elementary specials teachers (music, art, PE) teach fewer class hours than other elementary teachers. The Board of Education is of the opinion that all elementary teachers should be treated in a fair and equitable manner.

The Board of Education and the HEA did reach tentative agreement on five compensation
items including the new opportunity for teachers to earn extra compensation for National Board Certification.

The meeting ended at 10:30 p.m. The HEA and the Board of Education are scheduled to
meet with the Federal Mediators at 5:00 Tuesday, September 16, 2008.

  1. They are content to meet daily until the board caves in to their outrageous demands. You made a generous offer and they turned it down. then they lied and said they would not strike while negotiations were on going.perhaps liars should not be teaching.
