So far I have found three places where one can obtain a free Northwest Herald.
I’ve spoken of Colonial Cafe before. I love its citrus mandarin salad with or without chicken.
Next I found a box just as one enters the Woodstock Public Library. The woman taking one said her retired husband liked to read the sports.
The third place is outside of Mr. A’s on Route 14 and Dole Avenue.
Saturday, I counted 29 papers in the box.
29 Northwest Heralds were offered for free at the newsbox in front of Crystal Lake’s Mr. A’s on Saturday morning.
Are there other locations where people are offered free Northwest Heralds?
I believe that advertisement prices depend on how many papers are circulated not how many people subscribe.
Can the NWH count the free papers as being circulated then they can charge accordingly?

There’s another freebie box o’ birdcage liners next to the Windmill restaurant in McHenry ….. plus all the hundreds of papers showered on all the public libraries and Centegra Hosps.
They have to keep their printed numbers up even w/o subscriptions to keep their advertising rates high.
I wonder if this padding amts to fraud on their hapless and ever-diminishing advertising base?
I won’t shed a tear when the Shaw-rag folds up….. hopefully in the next few months.
I mad a trip a few months back to their HQS (you know, that place near CL paid for w/ a sweetie loan from the state which req’d little, if any, interest …the loan Anne Hughes and Klemm squibbed for ’em back in the 90s)
But alas, what was once filled w/ buzy bees is now a lil Shaw ghosttown.
Maybe they have big plans to ape the Trib’s Red Eye and make the NWH a totally free wipe.
Fewer and fewer shell out for the rag ….. the obituary page(s) regularly feature their dying readership.

The suicide Metra-crook Pagano supposedly told Fatty to keep his imminent railway demise off of the front page if anything was printed ….. but Al of the forked tongue … the ex-ward heeler from Chicago said he ‘couldn’t” and told Pagano to rethink his exit strategy …… just goes to show you NOBODY listens to Fat Al anymore ….. and nobody gives a hoot about the NWH puff piece lies either ………..
Maybe Nygren will (or already has) transferred his subscription to his palatial Florida manse ……. if so, he’d be one of the scant few out-of-county subscribers.
Maybe the Northwest Herald is not printing as many teacher appreciation articles as the Daily Herald.
The teacher appreciation articles are typically multi-page articles, longer in length than the Jake Griffin government transparency articles.
The Northwest Herald is staffed by many writers who probably would be better off writing for a middle school newspaper.
I would categorize it as a small town news rag.
