Some Tollway Board Members, Like Much of Government, Wants to Play Nanny

The Daily Herald has an article today that hit one of my hot buttons.

The speed limit would be 70 MPH here.

From the summary, it appears some members think the way lots of government officials think.

We are too stupid to figure things out.

The speed limit would  55 MPH here and out to the Des Plaines Oasis.

In this case, we won’t be able to read speed limit signs that are different on different parts of the tollway.

Here’s the excerpt with a link:

Tollway wants higher I-90 speeds, but officials warn of confusion

The tollway made changes to increase speeds on parts of I-90. Not so fast, some directors said, it’s confusing. Full Story

Apparently, the paid members of the Board don’t realize that people regularly ignore current speed limits.

One member pointed to people driving from Wisconsin being confused when the speed limit dropped from 70 to 65 MPH at Randall Road.

  1. The Illinois Tollway System – a scam so big that it is only surpassed by the DEMOCRAT party of Illinois itself.

  2. I avoid the tollways whenever possible. I’d rather drive a longer way to get where I am going.

  3. I have avoided the Tollways, since the very early 90’s or late 80’s.

I would bag pennies to pay . . .then the Tollway came out and said, “We Will No Longer Accept Pennies”.

I figured then, they don’t need my money.

  4. It is not easy to figure out the toll rates when zipping down the tollway.

On I-90, the “mainline” tolls (not entrance / exit ramps) using I-Pass transponder are:

    South Beloit – $0.95

    Belvidere – $1.50

    Marengo – $1.50

    Elgin – $0.75

    Devon – $0.75

    ++++++++++

The exit / entrance ramp tolls vary from $0.30 – $0.75.

Using cash is 2x the transponder rate.

Here is the current price list.

The tollway began a massive building spree in 2011 when Pat Quinn was in office as Governor.

One of several recent projects was to convert the Elgin – O’Hare Expressway, which didn’t go to Elgin or O’Hare, into the 390 tollway, with flyovers connecting it to the I-290 expressway.

Now the tollway is extending the 390 tollway to the western edge of O’Hare, parallel with Thorndale.

The plans to build a western entrance and terminal to O’Hare have seemingly been scrapped.

There are plans for the 390 to connect with a proposed 490 tollway that will wrap north around O’Hare to I-90, and south around O’Hare to I-294.

The tollway is currently in negotiations with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) regarding 490 construction on land currently owned by the railroad.

    ++++

Another project was widening / adding lanes to all of I-90.

  5. Jg and another? Good for you! Don’t play their game. It works, but more have to wake to that fact.

  6. You have to wonder about how speed, limits are set.

US 14 between Woodstock and Crystal Lake, which is now a safe and divided 4-lane highway has a 45 MPH limit.

How does that make sense when compared to 2-lane parts of Illinois 176, 173, 23 and US 14 west of Woodstock that are 55 MPH.

If 55 MPH is deemed safe on the 2-lane numbered highways, then US 14 4-lane needs to be higher than 55, perhaps 65 MPH.

But, on the other hand, if 45 MPH is the safe speed on the new 4-lane US 14, then these other 2-lane numbered highways currently at 55 MPH need to be lowered to perhaps 35 MPH.

Another comparison would be the US 20 segment, between I90 and Marengo, which is mostly 55 MPH.

If 55 MPH is deemed safe on US 20, then the I90 segments currently posted at 55 MPH need to be raised to perhaps 75 MPH.

  7. So are they lowering the speed limit?

I thought it was 90 when there was no traffic…

  8. The 45 MPH speed limits on Route 62 through South Barrington and Route 14 from Crystal Lake to Woodstock are just stupid.

50 MPH on Cherry Valley Road in Bull Valley between Mason Hill and Crystal Springs Roads and 45 on Route 14.

    Simply stupid.
