Good Evening District 300 Community,
I am contacting you to address the recent arrest involving a District 300 staff member.
In May of 2023, the Algonquin Police Department informed District 300 that they were conducting an investigation into Mr. Donald Peters, a staff member at Westfield Community. The district promptly cooperated with the investigation.
On July 18, 2023, Mr. Peters was arrested on multiple charges, including two Class X felony counts of solicitation and reproduction or distribution of child pornography. The Algonquin Police Department has released a statement detailing the charges against Mr. Peters, which can be viewed by clicking here [or looking below].
Today, July 20, 2023, the Algonquin Police Department informed the district that Mr. Peters may have requested social media contact information from District 300 students.
At this time, the Algonquin police continue to investigate whether any District 300 students provided contact information or established a social media connection with Mr. Peters. District 300 will continue to fully support law enforcement’s efforts.
Mr. Peters began working as an attendance secretary at Westfield in September 2018.
Prior to this role, Mr. Peters served as head custodian at Jacobs High School from August 2016 through September 2018, and a night custodian and custodian night supervisor at Wright Elementary School from September 2007 through August 2016.
District 300 fully acknowledges the significance of these charges, and we are taking the following immediate actions to address this matter:
- Mr. Peters has been placed on administrative leave, effective July 18, 2023. [Will he be being paid?]
- Mr. Peters is not permitted on any District 300 property.
- District 300 will continue to cooperate fully with the Algonquin Police Department’s investigation.
- District 300 will continue conducting an internal investigation and turn over all findings to the Algonquin Police Department.
- District 300 has made resources available, including counselors and social workers, to support any student or staff member affected by this incident. (The contact information to request counselors and social workers has been included later in this message).
- District 300 will continue to reinforce our existing professional development training to ensure our staff identify and report these types of incidents in a prompt manner.
I ask parents and guardians to speak with their children.
If you believe Mr. Peters requested social media contact information from your child or if you would like to report a concern, please contact the Algonquin Police Department at 847-658-4531 and ask to speak with the Investigation Division.
This situation is concerning to all of us.

Mr. Peters’ was hired in District 300 on September 4, 2007. While working for the district, Mr. Peters held the following positions:
- Night Custodian at Wright Elementary School from September 4, 2007 through June 26, 2016;
- Custodian Night Supervisor at Wright Elementary School from June 27, 2016 through August 21, 2016;
- Head Custodian at Jacobs High School from August 22, 2016 through September 23, 2018;
- Attendance Secretary at Westfield Community School from September 24, 2018;
- Mr. Peters was placed on administrative leave on July 18, 2023.

Child Pornography Arrest
[Algonquin IL – July 20, 2023] On 07/18/2023, the Algonquin Police Department arrested 34-year-old Donald J. Peters of Linden Ct. in Cary, for
- two Class X felony counts of solicitation and
- reproduction or distribution of child pornography.
With the assistance of Cary Police, Illinois Attorney Generals Office and the Lake County Sheriffs Office, investigators also executed a search warrant at the subject’s residence in Cary, Illinois.
Peters was charged with the following offenses:
- 720 ILCS 5/11-20.1(a)(2) Child Pornography- Reproduce or distribute video (Class X)
- 720 ILCS 5/11-20.1(a)(7) Child Pornography- Solicits another to provide (Class X)
- 720 ILCS 5/12-6(a)(1) Intimidation- Physical Harm (Class 3)
- 720 ILCS 5/12-6(a)(5) Intimidation- Expose to hatred, contempt or ridicule (Class3)
- 720 ILCS 5/11-20.1(a)(6) Child Pornography- Possess visual reproduction (Class 3)
- 720 ILCS 5/12-7.5(a)(2) Cyberstalking- Suffer emotional distress (Class 4)
- 720 ILCS 5/12-7.5(a)(1) Cyberstalking- Cause fear for safety (Class 4)
- 720 ILCS 5/26.5-3(a)(1) Electronic Harassment- Obscene message (Class B misdemeanor)
- 720 ILCS 5/26.5-3(a)(5) Electronic Harassment- Make threat (Class B misdemeanor)
- 720 ILCS 5/26-1(a)(1) Disorderly conduct- breach of the peace (Class C misdemeanor)
Bond on the arrest warrant was $250,000.00 (10% applies).
Peters posted bond and was released.
The investigation into this matter revealed that Peters, a longtime employee of Community Unit School District 300, may have solicited students for their social media accounts.
Community Unit School District 300 has continued to cooperate with the Algonquin Police Department and provided significant assistance throughout this investigation.
