McHenry Route 31 Shootout Results in Ten-Year Sentence

From the State’s Attorney:

MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FOR AGGRAVATED DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM

Deontae Wade

Deontae M. Wade, a 28-year-old man from Waukegan, Illinois, was sentenced to ten years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on February 1, 2024. Wade pleaded guilty to the charge of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.

Wade was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Mark R. Gerhardt.

Wade’s case stems from a shooting that occurred on August 29, 2021, around 1:25 PM near the intersection of Route 31 and Bull Valley Rd in McHenry.

Wade was involved in a rolling shootout between two vehicles where over 70 shell casings were recovered by police.

Gunfire also struck a nearby vehicle that was sitting in traffic at the intersection.

A warrant was issued for Wade a couple of days later.

At the time, Wade was on electronic monitoring for an unrelated case out of Lake County, IL, and was due to be discharged from his sentence.

On September 8, 2021, Wade went to the Lake County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility in Waukegan to have the electronic monitoring device removed.

Before Wade’s arrival, Lake County correctional officers were advised that Wade had an arrest warrant issued for the shooting in McHenry.

When Wade arrived at Lake County Correctional Center the officers attempted to take him into custody on the warrant.

Wade defeated the officer’s attempt to handcuff him and fled the building.

In March of 2022, officers of the Lakemoor Police Department conducted a traffic stop and were able to
identify the driver of the vehicle as Wade.

He attempted to elude officers again but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

McHenry County’s State’s Attorney Patrick D. Kenneally is grateful that this incident did not result in any injuries or fatalities.

Kenneally expresses appreciation for the diligent work and commitment to both the McHenry Police Department and Lakemoor Police Department, along with McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Ashur Youash.
