Teen-Driven Vehicle Crashes into Woodstock Concrete Youth Baseball Dugout

Traffic Crash – Field of Dreams

On Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at approximately 9:43 A.M., Officers from the Woodstock Police
Department were called to the Field of Dreams baseball field in Emricson Park in response to a traffic
crash.

Upon arrival, officer located one green Toyota Sienna minivan had crashed into the first base side
of the dugout with driver side airbag deployment.

Fortunately, the vehicle only struck property and the only reported injuries were to the occupants of the
vehicle who ranged in age from 12 to 13 years old.

Of the four youths that were in the vehicle, 3 of the 4 were taken to the hospital. One with a laceration on their leg and two as a precaution.

Based upon statements from the occupants, it is believed that the vehicle, which nobody in the area heard running, was slipped into drive accidently while attempting to adjust the radio, resulting in the vehicle moving forward, down the hill, and into the concrete dugout.

Aside from the parents who owned the vehicle and were there watching the game, all other parents of the youths were notified of the incident and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

It should also be noted that a Hampshire baseball team, who was in the first base side dugout, was unharmed.

No citations were issued.

From the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District

On Saturday, April 27 at 9:43AM, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District was dispatched to 900 W. South St., Emricson Park, for the reported vehicle that drove into a baseball dugout.

Firefighters arrived on scene within 5 minutes and observed a vehicle that had collided with the backside of a dugout at the “Dream Field.” Crews quickly began assessing the scene and identified the only injured parties were still inside the passenger vehicle.

A total of four juveniles were inside the vehicle when it traveled down the hill.

Three juveniles were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

One juvenile was evaluated by paramedics but declined any injuries.

A game was in progress when the collision occurred, with nearly a dozen teenage baseball players inside the dugout.

Fortunately, the concrete structure protected them in the collision.

Additionally, several patrons watching the game were alerted to the vehicle and safely removed themselves from its path.

We are very fortunate the swift actions of many individuals prevented a catastrophic incident.

Representatives from the City of Woodstock and Public Works were requested to evaluate the damaged dugout.

The Woodstock Police Department is investigating the crash and any additional questions pertaining to the investigation (cause, fault, seat-belt use, speeds, etc.) should be referred to them.

  1. Slipped into gear while adjusting the radio. Ya gotta be pretty gullible to swallow that one.
