UPDATE: McHenry County GOP: Oops, Executive Committee Selection of Replacement State’s Attorney Candidate Inadequate, CONVENTION CALLED

UPDATE FROM GOP CHAIRMAN JEFF THORSEN:

As you are aware, the State’s Attorney has stepped out of the race on Wednesday.

I am calling for a convention of our precinct committee people to vote on the candidate’s replacement.

On Wednesday, May 1, 2024. we will convene at Floras Banquets in Woodstock at 6 PM.  This is a very important meeting and we should all try and attend.

= = = = =

While the new by-laws of the McHenry County Republican Central Committee state that its Executive Committee has decision-making power between conventions, replacing candidates on the ballot is not one of them.

That means McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally’s choice to replace him on the ballot–First Assistant Randi Feese–has not been officially selected yet.

I was remembering in times past when a County Superintendent of Schools decided not to run for election that a party convention was held to select a replacement.

Apparently, that is still the law, regardless of what the McHenry County Republican Central Committee by-laws say.

Other candidates could, of course, be nominated.

I think this part of State law is relevant:

In the proceedings to nominate a candidate to fill a vacancy or to fill a vacancy in the nomination, each precinct, township, ward, county, or congressional district, as the case may be, shall, through its representative on such central or managing committee, be entitled to one vote for each ballot voted in such precinct, township, ward, county, or congressional district, as the case may be, by the primary electors of its party at the primary election immediately preceding the meeting at which such vacancy is to be filled. 1. New bylaws???

How about new brains… If the ‘leadership’ thought it was okay to sidestep the law and their own bylaws and corronate anyone, then they should all resign.

This type of action is inexcusable.

  2. Your McHenry County GOP “chairman” got it wrong?

Probably listening to the do no wrong Orvillains he adores!

The King must ask the people.

Poor Thorsen… never a true leader.

  3. It was a pretty slimy move by Keneally to deny Republican voters a voice in selecting his successor, but I can’t say I’m surprised that he’d do something like that.

It would be really funny if it backfired on him and someone else got the nomination at the mini-convention.

No Dem ran in the primary, but the Dems will probably pick a candidate now.

This could turn out to be a big time screw up by someone who’s no stranger to screwing up.

  4. Laughable GOP, you suck.

    Another Pokorny personality?

I do wonder what the hell was behind Kenneally’s sudden BS announcement.

Why do people lie about family matters as the reason for their sudden exits?

Something stinks! But as an Algonquin resident, I’m quite glad to see the shield of the crooked Millers go away for good.

Hanlon would he a great replacement!

  5. IMHO, and although I don’t know Randi Freese, actually always saw the name in the paper and thought it was a man. Oh well, sucks to be old and not identify with pronouns and names ending in I. She would probably make a good SA but for me, I cannot overcome the appearance of a conflict of interest with her husband being a Judge in the jurisdiction for which she would Govern/prosecute. The costly mess for the constant recusals for conflict. Then, god forbid, their marriage goes South and she replaces/displaces him, in the house that is. Then, as the other poster says, we the people get no say in who is on the ballot. I will change parties and vote for the Dem if I am forced to choose. Even being promoted to 1st Assistant IMHO is out of bounds and conflicting for perceived justice and the constant costly appeals that would be generated, especially if she was the SA.

  6. It’s always nepotism in McHenry Co.

Ask Judge “Tiffany” the oft reversed idiot.

  7. I recall in 2016 before the County Elections asking Aaron Shepley why he was backing Democrat Jack Franks for Board Chairman and doing so while under allegations of criminal misconduct as a State Representative?

Aaron was at the time the McHenry County Vice-Chairman of the Republican party and made no sense.

Aaron replied that it was greasing the wheels as Franks father held a tremendous amount of power and influence to perhaps secure future favors.

Wasn’t Thorson appointed in November 2015 by county party officials to replace Ken Koehler for District 2?

Thorson was a member of Aaron’s City council for over fifteen years in CL.

Aaron also endorsed Kenneally in 2016 for States Attorney.

Kenneally then didn’t prosecute the allegations of crimes regarding Algonquin Township where the township attorney was connected to Frank’s father.

Algonquin Township encompasses a large part of CL.

IMO its the illusion of a free government by and for the People and instead a closed club that you and I aren’t a part of that was set up to benefit a small, select group regardless of political party affiliations.

  8. Ah, the Blog Creatures!

They must be fed first before the truth can be put forth.

As far as I know, Jeff Thorsen’s salary as County Republican Chair remained flat last year at $0.

I can remember asking a previous County Chair what she thought of running for office, she replied the uncompensated positions were an “endless source of aggravation”.

She’s right, at least Thorsen caught the mistake in time before it snowballed.

Who the hades cares why Kenneally is retiring, (wait for it), at the end of his term in November?

Four young children at home and aging parents?

In Blog World that’s a mighty poor excuse!

The man prosecuted criminals and kept McHenry County safe.

Go and enjoy your life! BTW –

Randi Freese prosecutes CRIMINAL cases, her husband hears FAMILY COURT matters – no conflicts here!

I have a proposition though, since the only way the Blog Creatures will contribute to constructive local politics is from around building corners and squatting on top of roofs like gargoyles, please let me bring you to the convention on May 1!

I’ll chain you to the stage floor at Flores Banquets just like in the movie King Kong!

    It’ll be great!

    We’ll show ’em!

  9. Hmmmm!

Back in the day (circa 1978?), Bill Cowlin voluntarily stepped down as states attorney in order that his older brother, Henry, CO ld become a circuit judge.

It was said at the time to avoid conflicts, but I don’t know that it was required by law.

It was, however, a class move.

  10. Ah, yes, the Bill Cowlin who told a newspaper that electing me State Representative wold be like putting the fox in the henhouse.

  11. Kenneally removing himself from the 2024 MCSA election after being placed on the ballot was a planned and coordinated act IMO.

    Prediction

Based on past similar events, IMO between the announcement of his leaving as MCSA and election day Kenneally will resign and Freese will be put into place as States Attorney.

She will then be in Office prior to this ‘election’ with no competition to oppose her on the ballot.

I did some research over the past several days and found that in 2015 Thorsen left his position on the city council of CL where as his replacement was then hand picked by Aaron Shepley avoiding any public scrutiny or consent.

I believe that the same strategy is going to be used in this circumstance and this GOP meeting a ruse to accomplish this as it appears that the same people are involved IMO.

  12. We will find out the real reason why Patrick stepped down after he leaves.
