The McHenry County Mental Health Board is asking people to come and make their voice heard regarding support for people with mental health challenges and developmental disabilities.
The board is hosting its annual town hall meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at its headquarters at 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake. Your input can make a difference in how our county supports residents in matters of mental health, intellectual / developmental disabilities, and substance use.
Voters created the Mental Health Board by referendum to allocate tax money to area agencies that assist McHenry County residents and families facing these issues. Last month, voters approved a referendum to replace the property tax that funds the agency with a retail sales tax.

I’ve dealt with mental illness with several of my family members and I’m not sure who goes through a bigger hell!!!
Recently, one was suicidal and in another state. Every single governmental agency had differing requirements to get them
Help or admitted to a hospital. It was the biggest circus ever!
The police would show up with swat teams based upon our cry for help! BUT they refused to enter the house, and if the victim stated “no I’m not going to hurt myself” even though they told the family they were going to commit suicide – they retreated and refused to take them against their will to a treatment center. Their excuse “what officer’s life were we willing to risk to enter the home, it’s too risky if they have a gun!”
While I cannot stand this State another day and trying to get out, in IL overall their is a Police protocol that the police will intervene and take the person with the mental health issue to a treatment facility as they’ve expressed they are here to “serve and protect”….
That is a NECESSARY first step in helping someone that will not get help on their own.
So if they are asking for ideas, bring them bc unless you’ve dealt with mental health issues personally with those you know and love, at a minimum there MUST be consistency in how things are handled not only for public safety but moreso for the person at risk!
