Back to the Future in County Board Leadership Contests

Newly-elected McHenry County Board Vice Chairman John Jung and Chairman Ken Koehler are sworn into office by 22nd Judicial District Chief Judge Michael Sullivan.

As predicted Saturday, Ken Koehler won re-election as McHenry County Board Chairman. He was challenged by Marc Muneratto, who mustered eight votes, up from two in his 2008 challenge.

The vote was 15-8 with one absence, Virginia Peschke.

The Vice Chairmanship race was more exciting.

There was a three-way race between the 2008-10 Vice Chairman Jim Heisler, the pre-2008 Vice Chairman John Jung (who lost his seat in 2008) and Sandra Salgado. I outlined a bit of the race earlier today.

After their nominations for Vice Chairman, each of the candidates were asked by newcomer Donna Kurtz (seen second from the left in the back row) to tell what they would bring to the office. By coincidence they were all sitting on the front row. Sandy Salgado spoke first. Here you see John Jung (on the right) making his pitch. Last was Jim Heisler, who is sitting in the middle.

There were three ballots.

On the first ballot, Salgado placed first, receiving eight votes, Jung seven and Heisler six. Marc Munaretto and Randy Donley voted “Present.” A majority of the 23 members present and voting was required for election.

On the second ballot, Salgado’s total remained the same, while four of Heisler’s supporters went over to Jung giving Jung a total of eleven votes. Heisler had two votes in the second round. Again, Munaretto and Donley voted “Present.”

“At this time I will withdraw myself as a candidate,” Salgado announced. “I look forward to doing what I have done at this time knowing nothing will change.”

On the third ballot, Jung received nineteen votes, Heisler two and Munaretto and Donley voted “Present” again.
